Validity and Failure of the Cauchy-Born Hypothesis in a Two-Dimensional Mass-Spring Lattice

چکیده
The Cauchy-Born rule postulates that when a monatomic crystal is subjected to a small linear displacement of its boundary, then all atoms will follow this displacement. In the absence of previous mathematical results, we study the validity of this rule in the model case of a 2D cubic lattice interacting via harmonic springs between nearest and diagonal neighbours. Our main result is that for favourable values of the spring constants and spring equilibrium lengths, the CB rule is actually a theorem. Simple counterexamples show that for unfavourable spring parameters or large displacements the CB rule fails. Moreover the resulting overestimation of the lattice energy per unit volume by the CB rule cannot be cured by convexification (let alone quasiconvexification) of the CB energy. The main tool in our proof is a novel notion of lattice polyconvexity which allows us to overcome the difficulty that the elastic energy as a function of atomic positions can never be convex, due to frame-indifference.

The permeability and tortuosity of pore-scale two and three-dimensional random porous media were calculated using the Lattice Boltzmann method (LBM). Effects of geometrical parameters of medium on permeability and tortuosity were investigated as well. Two major models of random porous media were reconstructed by computerized tomography method: Randomly distributed rectangular obstacles in a uni...
متن کاملStability and size-dependency of temperature-related Cauchy–Born hypothesis
In continuum mechanics, the constitutive models are usually based on the Cauchy–Born (CB) hypothesis which seeks the intrinsic characteristics of the material via the atomistic information and it is valid in small deformation. The main purpose of this paper is to investigate the temperature effect on the stability and size-dependency of Cauchy–Born hypothesis. Three-dimensional temperature-rela...
متن کاملSufficient Conditions for the Validity of the Cauchy - Born Rule Close to so (
The Cauchy-Born rule provides a crucial link between continuum theories of elasticity and the atomistic nature of matter. In its strongest form it says that application of affine displacement boundary conditions to a monatomic crystal will lead to an affine deformation of the whole crystal lattice. We give a general condition in arbitrary dimensions which ensures the validity of the Cauchy-Born...
